Alfred Whatcott

My grandfather Whatcott was born in England and raised there until he got to be a man. Then, because he joined the L.D.S. church, his folks disinherited him. He decided to come to America. In coming across the water he met Isabella Paxton. [NOTE: Alfred and Isabella were married in England and had several children there before coming across to America. RFB] He painted murals for the captain and different ones on the ship to pay his way across, as well as doing other work. He was a great artist. [NOTE: Actually, Alfred was a sailor by trade and paid for his family's transportation to America by working as a sailor during the trip. RFB]

When they reached Utah he was sent down, by orders of Brigham Young, to what they call Orderville. The Order of Enoch was then in vogue down there. He was sent out by the bishop and the ones in the ward to go out and chop posts and get some logs and things across the river. They had to cross the Sevier River. It was in the spring of the year and the water was very high. On his way back the load of logs or whatever he was carrying tipped over. (He had oxen or mules, I don't know which.) He disappeared along with some of the logs that floated down the stream and they couldn't find him. They searched for several days and they just couldn't find his body. One day Uncle John Black, [John Black was a brother-in-law to Alfred having married Isabella Paxton's sister. RFB] according to his story, was in his cabin where he'd been working down in that area. In the afternoon my grandfather Whatcott, Alfred Whatcott, appeared to him in the cabin. He stepped right in the door. Uncle John said, "Why Alfred, I thought you were drowned." And grandfather replied, "I was, but you're having a hard time finding my body." Then he told him where he'd find it -- down around the river bend in a clump of bushes. They made a raft and went out to this spot and there they found his body. It had decomposed quite a bit and they couldn't move his body very far so they buried it on the banks of the river.

Now father [Henry Whatcott] questioned Uncle John just before he died about that and he said it was the absolute truth. Father said, "Uncle John, are you sure you weren't dreaming?" Uncle John replied, "No, Henry, I was wide awake. It was in the afternoon and I wasn't asleep; I was as wide awake as I am now. He came; and after he gave me the message he just smiled and faded away."

He lived in the Order of Enoch for quite some time while he was in that area and he didn't like it. He said it was unjust and that the bishop's son could get away with almost anything, he and his friends, but the rest of them had to get out and work for what they got. One time he and some of the other boys were sent out to chop posts. They chopped for several days. When they got the posts all chopped for the fencing and came back they found the bishop's son and his friends riding horses and having a great time making hoopla. He didn't like that very well, and the next time they asked him to go out he said yes, he'd go, provided the bishop's son would go along with them. I don't know how that came out. And that's the order according to the way I got it from my father.

Henry Whatcott and Louisa Temperance Manhard family history
by H. D. Whatcott

Henry Whatcott was the oldest of the family of Alfred Whatcott and Isabella Paxton. After his father drowned he had to get out and sort of try to make a living. He was just a young man, or a young boy you might say, about 8 years of age. He didn't get much formal schooling, but he did become well educated on his own. He would sit up late at night. Many times I've gotten up in the middle of the night, 1 or 2 o'clock, and found him reading by the lamp light. He was almost a walking dictionary. He had a very good vocabulary. He was a brick mason and a stone cutter by trade. He learned this through apprenticeship, that is working for others and learning how to do it. He picked that up and made a fair living. It wasn't the best, but he got by. Many of the houses which he built are still standing in Kanosh where he built them.
Shortly after father and mother were married and they had one child which was a daughter Isabella, named after father's mother, they had their patriarchal blessings. Father's patriarchal blessing said that his sons and daughter would carry on the work of the Lord. Father said to Mother after, "Well, I think that the brother who was writing it down made an error there. I think he just left the "s" off daughter, because more than likely, according to the law of averages, we'll have about as many daughters as we have sons, having the first one a daughter." But they never did have another daughter. That was their last daughter. They had six sons and no more daughters.
Mother was good-natured and we all loved her dearly. She was full of fun and always had a joke and could always get even with most everybody. She was very witty. One time I recall that as I was going along down the street with her as a child, I was a blond, the lightest one in the family, Will Paxton, who was a cousin to father, said to mother, "Why is it that you have one white man in the family?" Mother said, "I beat all the Paxton blood out of him." That got Will Paxton. He just looked at her for just a minute and started to laugh. She was hard to get the better of. She was very witty and a good hard worker.

Note by Rita F. Bartholomew: I remember that Uncle Devello once told me that his mother and sister kept his hair (which was curly) long and in curls until he was quite old (I think 5 or 6). It got to him finally and he asked one of his older brothers to cut it for him. His brother took him out behind the barn and did as he had asked. His mother was upset or sad, but after that let him look like a boy instead of a girl and he was grateful for that.

Document #07 Henry Whatcott -- by Cyril Whatcott

Born: 26 September 1857 Middlesboro, Yorkshire, England

Died: 17 May 1950 Kanosh, Utah

Grandfather Whatcott came with his sister from England, age 6, where his father settled in Parowan, Utah. His two brothers, I believe, were born in this country. They settled in Parowan, Utah. From James Anthony, Alfred, and Henry come all the Whatcotts in the United States. (1981) According to a company selling "coat of arms" insignia, in 1975 there were 40 households in the United States with the surname "Whatcott". Although Whatcott is an unusual name there are many names ending in "cott" For example: Talcott, Wonnacott, Kennecott, Walcott, Scott, Allcott, Abott, Wescott, Ascott, Wescoatt, LaCock, Hancock, Olcott are names I have heard. There are probably others. Many households have the name "Whatcott" now and it is growing in number.

A word might be said here about Alfred Whatcott, the father of Henry, Anthony, and Alfred. In crossing the Sevier River to get a load of oles Alfred, the father, was drowned as his load went over in the high run-off water season. He was drowned. They say that three weeks later he appeared and told my grandfather's uncle, John Black, where his body was to be found. This story will appear later as told by my Uncle Devello, Henry's boy.

Alfred went from Parowan to Panguitch where he became a member of the United Order. He never liked the United Order because as he said some worked while the bishop's boy played. He was a seaman by trade. His parents may have worked in an English workhouse. The conditions of these institutions were terrible. Sometimes two families lived in one room. Many families lived in one room apartments. The working day was 14 hours. I believe these conditions to be similar to a Chinese commune under communism.

After settling in Parowan my grandfather made his way to Kanosh where he became a stone mason and a fruit farmer. He raised apples and tomatoes which he carried to Beaver some 50 or 60 miles to the south of Kanosh. Beaver could not raise much fruit because of the climate. Kanosh somehow was well adapted for growing fruit and produce. My father remembered these trips to Beaver as a kid. At first they used horse and wagon, but later Grandfather bought a 1926 Chevy Truck. I remember this old truck which was worn out and parked when I saw it. Aunt Isabella used to sleep in the back of this truck when we visited for want of bedroom space. We took this trip to Kanosh from Logan once every 2 or 3 years when I was just a kid.

On these trips to sell fruit each fall they camped out and sat and read the Bible around the campfire. Henry used to sit up nights until 2 or 3 in the morning reading.

Henry was the most religious of his brothers. At the same time he had a problem with tobacco and some drinking. At age 57 he went in for a cataract operation which failed. My mother (Vesta Whatcott) visited him and tried to get him to learn braille so he could read. He passed it off by saying "Oh, I'll be dead in 4 or 5 years." Actually, he lived to the age of 93. He never did learn to read braille. He spent one third of his life blind.

I remember riding on Grandfather's old work plugs. He loved horses and animals, but my own father could never understand why Grandfather fed his horses better than his cows which furnished milk. Really however, in that day, a man's horses were to him what our autos are to us in this day.

Grandfather donated much time and energy for nothing in laying bricks for the bishops' storehouse in Kanosh. He later was hurt when they sold it to a "Jack" Mormon for 10 cents on the dollar when the United Order folded. Many people in Kanosh never paid for the work he did for them.

He broke the smoking habit right after his operation. Frequently, he found himself in the store to buy tobacco and when he thought, he would buy a bag of jelly beans.

Grandfather had a fast, bad temper. Then he got over things fast, but while he was angry those who got in his way felt his wrath. His wife was the only one who could handle him when he was angry.

My first introduction to Sears Roebuck catalogue was in the outside facilities they had in Kanosh as we visited as kids.

I remember one year when my Grandfather was very old, Uncle Irvin brought him for a visit to Logan. He wanted a drink of water and I remember asking him if he wanted warm water to drink. I'll never forget his laugh as he set me straight that he wanted cool water to drink.

Grandfather Whatcott was married in middle life in the Manti Temple and was ordained a Seventy, which office he held at the end of his life.

My grandfather had a sense of humor. My grandparents lived on about 20 acres of ground in a three room house he had built. During the depression they sold much of their land and had 3500 dollars in the bank. In the crash of 1929 the bank went broke and they lost all they saved for old age. It has been recorded that they planned on an indoor bathroom, but the loss of money ruined them for life. Aunt Isabella and Uncle Irvin took care of my grandparents, finally selling their home and taking my grandfather to Lynndyl. This was after my grandmother's death. Uncle Irvin had spent months away from his home to care for Grandfather until this move was made. As his belongings were given away he insisted on giving a toe chain and a saw to my father. My father after a first impulse decided he would take nothing. We still have this saw and chain.

He had beehives in his orchard. When he moved them everyone had to stay in the house. He put on a straw hat and a net from his had to his belt. With leather gloves he then went out and moved the hives. He kept the bees to help in his orchard.

The sheds were rustic. They were made of old poles with logs and three feet of straw for the roofs. One summer down there we tried to flood gophers out by carrying water from the ditch. We were not successful.

Uncle Devello says that the living they had was adequate, but I never received that impression from my father. My father always felt they lived in poverty.

The last time I was in Kanosh, all the barns were gone. All the trees and other buildings were gone. But the house still stands. Changed in many ways you can still tell the house, but the yard is very different. I guess you would expect changes in 54 years.

As an after thought, it should be stated that Alfred Whatcott was disowned for joining the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. His parents never forgave him for this step.

Henry Whatcott was born at Middlesboro, York, England, Sept. 26, 1857, the oldest child of Alfred and Isabella Paxton Whatcott. The parents joined the church and immediately had a desire to come to Zion.

Early in the spring of 1863, they with their two children, set sail for the United States with the intention of joining the Saints in the West. The voyage took them three months. Then the family traveled by train as far west as Florence, Nebraska; there they met oxen teams that had been sent from Utah to meet the immigrants.

He walked part of the distance across the plains. The family arrived in Utah in the fall of 1863.

His father was drowned in the Sevier River May 11, 1865, leaving the mother with her three small children, and a few months later another brother was born.

He married Louisa T. Manhard March 3, 1880, and to them one daughter and six sons were born. He followed the mason trade until his eyesight failed him, and finally in 1927 he lost his sight in both eyes.

He died at Lynndyl, Millard, Utah on May, 17, 1950, age 92, having been an active Latter-day Saint throughout his life.

He married Louisa Manhart and had one daughter and six sons.

Henry was a freighter and mason by trade and many of the homes he helped build in Kanosh are still standing today. He followed the mason trade until his eyesight failed him and finally, in 1927, he lost the sight in both eyes. He did some mason work after he was partially blind. His wife and daughter both died in 1936, and since that time he has made his home with a son in Lynndyl. --- Laura Cummings.

Henry Whatcott, son of Isobel Paxton Whatcott and Alfred Whatcott was born in Middlesboro, York, England, Sept. 26, 1857. His parents joined the church and early in the Spring of 1863, they set sail for the United States. Upon arrival, the family traveled by train as far west as Florence Nebraska. There they met ox teams sent from Utah to meet the immigrants. Henry walked part of the distance across the plains.

The family arrived in Utah the fall of 1863 and went to a sheep ranch at Parowan, then on to Panguitch where Henry's father was drowned. His mother and family, three boys and a girl, next moved to Kanosh. From then on Henry worked wherever he could find a job to help support the family, as soon as he was old enough he helped build a home for his mother. He married Louisa Manhard and had one daughter and six sons.

Henry was a freighter and mason by trade and many of the homes he helped build in Kanosh are still standing today. [The person who copied this used some shorthand. Since I can't read it I will put ... where the shorthand is.] He ... mason... his eyesight failed him, and finally, in 1927, he ... wife and daughter. Both died in 1936, and since that time he has made his home with a son in Lynndyl. His son Irvin's wife, is a most kind and gracious lady to Bro. Whatcott. Henry is proud of the fact that he had four grandsons on missions at the same time, 2 of them in Scotland. Henry Whatcott did most of the mason work on the following houses built in Kanosh, most of which are still standing.
